Description
1973 Jeep Commando Restomod
This 1973 Jeep Commando is an extensively reengineered classic 4x4, built as a rugged, modernized restomod with serious drivetrain, chassis, and cosmetic work already completed. The build combines the unmistakable character of Jeep’s final-year Commando with contemporary LS power, a heavy-duty automatic overdrive transmission, upgraded suspension, refreshed bodywork, and a long list of new supporting components.
Power comes from an LS3 6.2-liter V8 equipped with a Comp camshaft, ECU tuning, and a complete new wiring and fuel system. Power is delivered through a built 4L70E automatic transmission and a rebuilt transfer case, creating a substantially more capable and highway-friendly package than the original drivetrain. A custom aluminum radiator with electric fan and shroud, upgraded cooling overflow bottle, new power steering components, Hydroboost brake system, and performance exhaust components support dependable modern drivability.
The chassis has been separated from the body, stripped, repaired, refinished, and protected throughout. Work includes repair of corrosion in the rear floor, front and rear differential service and paint, refreshed transmission and transfer-case components, new seals and weatherstripping, and extensive undercarriage treatment. The frame and cab interior received rust-preventative coatings, while the underside was finished with rubberized undercoating for additional protection. Custom skid plates protect the front and rear differentials, transmission, and fuel tank.
Suspension and steering upgrades include FOX shocks, new steering-joint and shaft components, a short-version tilt steering column, Hydroboost mounting hardware, rear anti-roll bar, Wilwood master cylinder, Mickey Thompson tires, black lug nuts, and a 45-degree forged hose-end setup. Powder-coated hardware and structural components—including the front fenders and brackets, radiator support, tire carrier, and related pieces—complete the durable, purpose-built presentation.
The body has received major attention as well, with repairs to the driver-side rear quarter and rocker-panel sections, new windshield and passenger-seat belt brackets, a newly fabricated hood, a new tailgate, new weatherstripping, and replacement rear quarter panels. It is also accompanied by a completely rebuilt convertible top and a new canvas convertible top.
This is not a lightly modified vintage Jeep—it is a high-investment Commando restomod with a modern LS3/4L70E powertrain, meaningful chassis upgrades, substantial corrosion remediation, and extensive new or refinished supporting parts. It offers the open-air appeal and compact proportions of a classic 1973 Commando with the power, cooling, braking, steering, and durability upgrades expected from a properly conceived modern 4x4 build.
